WHAT HAVE BEEN ACCOMPLISHED:
JMEC has been structural subconsultant to major Prime Consultants for 6 different on-call bridge seismic retrofit contracts for a total of 18 bridges for the California Department of Transportation.
For Contract 59X844, JMEC completed the seismic analysis, seismic retrofit strategy determination, seismic retrofit design, and provided construction design support services for three bridges including the Figueroa Street Undercrossing (L/R).
Each bridge is a 224-ft 3-span reinforced concrete box girders on double column bents. The bridge is skewed at 57 degrees. Steel column casings were used to maintain an open pedestrian walkway for pedestrian safety on both sides of Figueroa Street. Large diameter CIDH piles were installed to minimize rotation of the bridge due to the skewed end. The retrofit measures included:
- Construct steel column casings
- Construct 72-in diameter CIDH piles with diaphragm bolsters at abutments
- Construct abutment lumber blockings
